Focal's Polyglass series (The V-Series) is one of the best bang-for-your buck component (or coaxial) system you buy. Of course this is just my humble, very-biased-towards-Focal opinion, but I guarantee if you do a side-by-side comparison at your local shop, you'll agree. And Focal has just upped the ante with the new 165VR component system.

The 165VR is a pretty decent step up from the 165V2 system, adding an all-new tweeter and Polyglass woofer to the family. The 6VR paper and micro-glass bead woofer has an extremely high sensitivity (94.5dB!), and an upgraded 32mm voice coil (compared to the V2's 25mm) for improved power handling. Focal's new V-cone also features a 31-degree angle and an aluminum phase plug for improved off-axis response, and plays all the way down to 80Hz. The component set also features the new TNB aluminum/magnesium tweeter that plays all the way to 28kHz!

The crossover network features a see-through case, offering a nice clear view of the audiophile componentry and art-like layout, which also makes it nice for showing off in your install. The flexible crossover has a selectable frequency and slope: 6db/octave @ 3.5Hz or 12db/octave @ 4.2kHz, and an adjustable treble level of -2, 0, or +2dB.

165 VR : The Highest Definition of sound
Focal is very pleased to introduce the new standard-bearer of the Polyglass line, the 165 VR.
This 2-way component set features a new aluminum inverted dome tweeter (the TNB), an
innovative crossover which combines cut-off frequency and filtering slope choices, and a truly
unique approach to sound tuning. Combining performance worthy of a professional sound
system with irreproachable definition, sound stage precision and tone accuracy, the 165 VR
opens new horizons to the Car Audio market.

165 VR:
The 165 VR kit succeeds the best selling 165 V2, offering more performance and improved
technology for about the same price. The 6 VR woofer features the new and improved Polyglass
cone that is significantly lighter in weight thanks to its radiating surface. This new cone is
also equipped with a specific profile at 31° that, like the center aluminum phase plug, creates a
better linearity of the frequency response curve in and outside the listening axis. The new 32mm
voice coil, as opposed to the 25mm for the woofer of the 165 V2 kit, offers greater power handling
for those who like it loud. It is driven by the new 90mm diameter by 17mm high magnet
which provides 94.5dB woofer sensitivity. Its high resonance frequency also allows easy integration
into the vehicle as it offers a linear curve from 80Hz to 28kHz.

The TNB:
The new aluminum/magnesium inverted dome TNB tweeter was developed with two goals in
mind: ensuring a perfect marriage with the Polyglass V1 line, while increasing the overall
performance level. Now, it’s done! The sound has increased in smoothness and yet still keeps the
dynamics characteristic to Focal tweeters. Directivity has also been reduced in order to offer even
more installation possibilities. The sound stage has also been increased in broadness and accuracy
with an outstanding center.

6 VR woofer:
The new 6 VR woofer with the Polyglass cone is the result of lengthy research and development.
It has a dual workload which aims at offering extremely high efficiency, in conjunction with a
very high-fidelity sound. Its 94.5dB sensitivity reveals the smallest details and transcends the
drum attacks or any other percussion. A special mention must be also paid to the punchy bass,
with its strong definition and accuracy.

Filtering:
The linearity of the TNB tweeter and the 6 VR woofer solves the numerous constraints that are
inherent to filtering. The easiness with which the two work together allows the birth of a new
concept for crossovers with variable cut-off frequencies and slopes. This is achieved by the
6dB/octave (3.5kHz) HP/LP or 12dB/octave (4.2kHz) HP/LP filtering which ensures a better
system integration in any installation regardless of the desired locations of the tweeter and the
woofer. As to the treble level setting (-2, 0, +2dB), it can be easily sharpened during the sound
tuning.

Complemented with a subwoofer, the 165 VR will position itself very quickly as an inescapable
reference on the market. Not just a new name, the significant upgrades of the woofer and the
tweeter parameters demonstrates that the 165 VR is a truly new and unique product. Music

คุณภาพเสียง
ทีมงานได้ติดตั้งลำโพงไฮเอนด์รุ่นนี้ในตู้ปิดปริมาตร 0.3 ลูกบาศก์ฟุต อัดใยแก้วพอประมาณ ป้อนสัญญาณจากซิงเกิล/ซีดี เข้าเพาเวอร์แอมพ์ 4 แชนแนล โดยใช้แชนแนลที่ 1/2 ขับชุดลำโพงทดสอบ ไม่ใช้ซับวูเฟอร์ร่วมในการทดลองฟัง เลือกระดับสัญญาณทวีเตอร์ 0 ดีบี

จากกราฟทดสอบ มีการตอบสนองความถี่ได้ที่ 63-20,000 HZ จุดกราฟมีความต่อเนื่อง กันดี เริ่มจากเสียงเบสส์ที่ลงได้ลึก 63 HZ ระดับเสียง 87 ดีบี ซึ่งทำได้ดีสำหรับวูเฟอร์ ขนาด 6 1/2" จุดกราฟขึ้นมาระดับ 90 ดีบี ที่ความถี่ 80-100 HZ กับเสียงเบสส์มีพลัง ซึ่งอัดได้ในระดับวัตต์ที่ให้มา ที่ความถี่ 125-160 HZ ระดับเสียง 93 ดีบี กับลูกเบสส์ กระชับทำได้ดี และที่ความถี่ 200-250 HZ ระดับเสียง 90 ดีบี จึงตอบรับได้ต่อเนื่อง สู่เสียงกลาง

เสียงกลางช่วงแรกที่ความถี่ 400-800 HZ ระดับเสียง 90 ดีบี ทำได้ดี เป็นดนตรีประสาน และเสียงร้องในโทนต่ำ อีกช่วงที่ความถี่ 1,000-2,500 HZ ระดับเสียง 87-90 ดีบี ได้เสียงร้องทั่วไปชัดเจน ดนตรีประสานกลมกลืน ส่วนเสียงแหลมช่วงแรกที่ความถี่ 3,150-6,300 HZ ระดับเสียง 87-90 ดีบี ได้ความพลิ้วใสฟังสบาย ที่ความถี่ 8,000-20,000 ็HZ ระดับเสียง 93 ดีบี กับเสียงแหลมบาดลึกถึงปลายเสียง

ทดลองฟังดนตรี POP/JAZZ/ROCK รุ่นนี้ให้เสียงดนตรีที่กลมกลืนกันทั้ง 3 ช่วง ลูกเบสส์หนักๆ มีเนื้อหา และออกกระชับทำได้ดี เสียงร้องชัดเจนน่าฟัง ดนตรีประสานมีรายละเอียด ชิ้นดนตรีเสียงแหลมบาดลึกแบบมีรายละเอียด ได้ความสมจริงดี
